Elena Castrillon, Director of the Hermanos de la Calle Student Liaison Committee, together with committee officers Zoe Burris, Julianne Gallagher and Juan Beltran got to work in a 48-hr fundraising marathon to help new Hermanos in need. Families composed of 47 adults and 29 children had recently been displaced from their homes and found themselves in a homeless state. Money was urgently needed to cover their stay at a motel in Hialeah and to provide them with groceries, books and school supplies for the children.
The team successfully raised $1500, which was so important to fulfill the urgent needs of Hermanos. We are grateful for the generosity of the families and friends of the Hermanos de la Calle organization, who graciously donated to this cause. Students from various schools such as Immaculata-La Salle, Gulliver Preparatory, Belen Jesuit Preparatory, ISPA, Coral Gables Senior High and Ransom Everglades served meals for the families, played with the children and shared so much love. This will for sure be an afternoon to remember, where, despite all odds and great difficulties, the children will keep beautiful memories for years to come.
